"You've got to feel it," is the first thing that comes from the mouth of seasoned soul singer Sharon Jones when asked what makes great music. "You've got to feeel it! In your bones, your heart, in everything and everywhere!" And if you've ever been to a Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings show, you know you can't but help feel their music. From the rumble and grumble of thick funk jerking you to the dancefloor to the soaring soul guaranteed to make you sigh, one thing is for sure: Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings are legitimate heavy-hitters.

Ms. Jones' funk pedigree can be traced to her hometown of Augusta, Georgia, the same town that birthed the Godfather of Soul himself: James Brown. And like Mr. Brown and countless soul singers before her, Sharon honed her vocal chops in the church. Once you get moved by the Spirit, you just gotta let it out and share it with the people, Sharon says. And share it she did. Moreover, it didnt take long for the young Sharon to be encouraged to take the spirit from the gospel and apply it to a more secular setting. This setting was realized when as a teenager she moved with her family to Brooklyn, NY and soon found herself saturated with the pulse of funk and disco. Little time passed before she became a staple within the studios, doing often uncredited back-up work for gospel, soul, disco and blues artists. However, when the commercial music landscape began to radically change during the 80s, demand for singers such as Sharon waned, and she soon found herself working at Rykers Island Jail as a corrections officer.

Fast forward to 1996. Still singing for her church, Sharon crosses paths with NYCs great indie-soul & funk label Desco Records. It is a match made in proverbial soul heaven; Sharons hefty voice greased by Desco house-band, the Soul Providers. Several memorable singles are quickly put to wax, thus providing enough soul power to take Ms. Jones and the band across the Atlantic, giving the people a sense of what real music tasted like back in the day, while earning Sharon the title, Queen of Funk. Sharons first full-length album, 2002s successful Dap Dippin with Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings on Brooklyn-based Daptone Records, served to solidify her reputation as Soul Sister #1.

THE DAP-KINGS are the house band for Daptone Records, where today's hottest Funk and Soul is laid to tape. They are presently the worlds mightiest Live Funk and Soul Revue, unique in their ability to deliver the kind of Soul Excitement that hasn't been felt since Mr. Brown himself graced the stage of the Apollo in 1969. The Dap-Kings are made up of musicians from The Soul Providers and The Mighty Imperials, both of which gained recognition for laying the music behind Desco Records' legendary catalog of funk 45's and LP's. Though their recordings are unmatched for their hardness and sheer ability to make people dance, their live show is what makes them a phenomenon.

When the Dap-Kings take to the stage with their dance steps and matching soul suits, it is as if someone lit the fuse on a keg of Soul Dynamite! The show commences with a dose of hard instrumentals which never fail to get the crowd moving like only deep hard funk can. Then when things seem like they can go no higher, the Dap-Kings bring their Sharon Jones to the stage. No matter where Sharon is or what kind of music she is singing, the strength of her gospel roots enable her to pour her soul into every note she sings and let anyone who hears know that Sharon Jones is Soul Sister No. 1!

In the winter of 2006, the band slowed its touring schedule to make time for a return to the studio. The resulting 100 Days, 100 Nights, slated for a much anticipated release in September of this year, is arguably their greatest achievement to date. With much more extensive songwriting and arranging contributions from the members of the band, the songs take more distinct and well-crafted forms, enabling a deeper more soulful return to traditional Rhythm and Blues roots. However, it is the raw fire and Soul which Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings consistently pour into their music that will make this record an irreplaceable part of many people’s lives.
